When someone wanted to be alone with their thoughts, they often sought out solitude. When the world had ended it was easy to find yourself alone with your thoughts.
Elaine had found herself alone with her thoughts quite often and as the days grew longer with the summer months ahead, it was easier to find herself wrapped up in something outside of her little territory. There was no longer snow on the ground to leave tracks in and the weather was not unbearably cold. Elaine was able to wear less layers of clothes when venturing out so she didn't have to worry about the extra weight on her arms and legs preventing her from fully moving around.
However there was a problem – because the animals were coming out of their hibernation it seemed that the undead were even more scattered as they attempted to get live meat. It was sickening really but there were times where Elaine allowed an animal that wrongly wandered into the city perimeters to take the fall for her own negligence.
There was also another problem, one that was posing an entirely different problem for Elaine; because of the situations where Elaine's morals were at stake and often times ruined, a depressive cloud began to follow Elaine around as she tried to go about her day. Because the times were different and basically reverting back to how it was prior to prescription medications, Elaine had to do what they did in the old days – self medicating. It actually became a determined subconscious goal of Elaine's to find alcohol and when she found it, she often drank whatever was in the bottle through out the day; if the day was bad enough it would be gone by the time her face went into her pillow or whatever makeshift bed she had if she didn't make it back in time.
The stress was wearing on Elaine and if someone who knew her from before saw her, they wouldn't recognize her. Her skin was darkened and worn thin like soft leather; she looked as if she was a mother of three obnoxious and uncontrollable children when she was, in fact, only 20 years old. Elaine had her fair share of run ins with alcohol at parties when she went with Axel and other friends but Elaine never dabbled in such activities like she was now.
A soft, slurred sigh escaped from Elaine's partially opened lips as she stared, glassy eyed, at the sky. Elaine was quite happy with herself today as she had stumbled across a person liquor store that had been opened on the outskirts of the city. It was plum full of the goodies that Elaine was constantly searching for and now that she found her own supply she became very protective, ensuring that the small business was protected as far as she could work with. It became a ran down shack of a old fashioned building that one wouldn't really look twice at unless it was a last resort.
Before leaving the building to her defenses that she had built Elaine had placed a couple of bottles in her bag before venturing out for the day; she began sleeping more and more and even later in the day so often times when her adventures started, it was no longer still dark with the sun rising but instead a full blown afternoon. It saddened her that she had lost so much day time but because Elaine no longer held a personal agenda – because her depression became her whole drive – she didn't care so much.
Now, Elaine was laying on the floor of the forest, her bag off to the side of her with colorful bottles of alcohol that she never looked twice at in a store; they became her best friends, because after all, her friends and family were no longer living and Elaine had yet to come across a person that wasn't fucked up, dead, or another creature entirely. So, it left very little room for imagination in Elaine's mind so now, she was mercilessly putting her kidneys at the hands of alcohol.
